Once you have added devices to your Mobile Guardian dashboard, it's time to start managing them by creating profiles. Profiles allow you to push multiple restrictions and configuration items to your devices, including web filtering, blocking the camera, setting the device background, and more.
#Note: Restrictions available vary depending on device/operating system
Managing Devices with Profiles in Mobile Guardian
Types of Profiles
Mobile Guardian offers two types of profiles: Baseline and Conditional.
- Baseline Profile: Contains all the restrictions you wish to have in place whenever there is no Conditional profile applied. This ensures your devices are always protected, regardless of time and location.
- Conditional Profile: Applies specific restrictions based on time and location parameters.
For a detailed breakdown of Baseline and Conditional profiles, please refer to the School Profile Overview
Configuration Options
We recommend you start by configuring your Baseline settings with the desired restrictions, then create Conditional profiles as needed. Here are some key sections to explore:
- Safe Content: Configure web filters, keyword filters, and YouTube filters. Note that enabling keyword filters and page title retrieval may slow down the browser.
#Note: The MG App is filtered across all operating systems.
- Blocklist: URLs that are blocked.
- Allowed List: Takes precedence over the Blocklist. If a URL is Blocklisted but added to the Allowed List, it will be allowed.
- Keyword Filter: Filters websites based on content keywords. You can add custom keywords in addition to prepopulated ones.
- Web Hosting Filter: Uses Netsweeper categories, which can be customized with Allowed List/Blocklist.
#Note: Always remember to save your settings.
- Restrictions: Apply various restrictions, which vary by operating system. For iOS devices, the restrictions depend on the device's supervision state (supervised devices offer greater control).
- Passcode: Set passcode restrictions on your devices.
- Network: Configure WiFi and proxy details necessary for device connectivity.
- Accounts: Configure LDAP, Google, and Mail accounts.
- Exchange Settings: Register exchange configurations.
-
Applications: Manage app permissions by Allow Listing or Blocklisting applications.
- Allowed List: Only listed applications (depending on the OS) will be displayed, excluding all others.
- Blocklist: Blocks or hides (depending on the OS) listed apps when the profile is active.
- Single App Mode: Locks the app into ‘kiosk mode’.
- Home Screen Layout: Drag and drop to create new groups. Note that adding apps to the layout does not install them unless they are already installed on the device.
#Note: You can either use Blocklist or Allowed List, not both simultaneously.
- Web Clip and Wallpaper: Configure device wallpaper and push web clips as part of the profile.
- Airplay and Airprint: Add Airplay and Airprint devices under your school's settings.
- MacOS Login: Enable MacOS login items that will be applied to the devices at login.
- Calendar: Configure and sync calendars on your profile.
- Contacts: Add CardDav email contacts.
By understanding and utilising these configurations, you can effectively manage and secure your devices using Mobile Guardian. For further assistance, please refer to our Profiles and Restrictions Section or contact our Support Desk.
