This article explains how to enable the YouTube Shorts filter in Mobile Guardian to block access to short-form video content on managed devices. YouTube Shorts present a particular challenge in education environments due to their algorithmically-driven, auto-playing format that can quickly divert students from focused work.
When enabled, this setting applies uniformly across all managed operating systems (iOS/iPadOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and ChromeOS).
Prerequisites
Before configuring the YouTube Shorts filter, ensure the following:
- You have administrator access to the Mobile Guardian Dashboard
- A Baseline or Conditional Profile has been created for the target device group
- The Web-filter and YouTube Filter are enabled within the profile’s Safe Content settings
Why Block YouTube Shorts
YouTube Shorts are short-form vertical videos (up to 60 seconds) that auto-play in a continuous feed. Unlike standard YouTube videos, Shorts:
- Auto-play sequentially without requiring user interaction, making it difficult for students to self-regulate
- Surface algorithmically recommended content that may not align with educational objectives
- Do not appear in standard YouTube category or channel blocklists, requiring a dedicated filter setting
Enabling the Shorts filter ensures this content format is blocked regardless of the channel or category it belongs to.
Step-by-Step Configuration
Step 1: Access Profiles
- Log in to the Mobile Guardian Dashboard.
- On the left-hand side panel, select Profiles.
- Locate the profile you wish to edit and click the pencil icon under the Actions column.
Step 2: Navigate to Safe Content
- In the profile editor, under the What heading, select Safe Content.
- Ensure that Enable Web-filter and Enable YouTube Filter are both ticked.
- Click the YouTube Filter tab.
Step 3: Enable the YouTube Shorts Filter
- Within the YouTube Filter tab, locate the YouTube Shorts toggle.
- Enable the toggle to block Shorts content on managed devices.
- Click Save to apply the changes to the profile.
Step 4: Verify Profile Assignment
- Ensure the profile is assigned to the correct device group under the Which devices heading in the Profiles section.
- Devices will receive the updated settings on their next sync.
What Happens When the Filter is Active
Once the YouTube Shorts filter is enabled:
- The Shorts tab and Shorts shelf on the YouTube home page are not accessible
- Direct links to Shorts content are blocked
- The Shorts feed (vertical swipe format) is unavailable
- Standard long-form YouTube videos remain accessible according to your other YouTube Filter settings (category blocklists, channel blocklists, etc.)
Platform Coverage
Platform | Supported |
iOS/iPadOS | Yes |
Android | Yes |
macOS | Yes |
Windows | Yes |
ChromeOS | Yes |
No platform-specific configuration is required. The setting is applied once in the profile and enforced on all assigned devices regardless of operating system.
Tips
- The Shorts filter works independently of category and channel blocklists. Even if a channel is on your Allowed list, Shorts from that channel will still be blocked when this filter is active.
- Combine with a Conditional Profile to block Shorts during school hours while permitting access outside scheduled times.
- This setting pairs well with the Hide Sidebar and Hide Thumbnails options to further reduce algorithmically-recommended content.
