Apple Configurator 2 is an OS X (macOS) application that allows for mass configuration of iOS 9+ devices while being physically connected to the Mac Computer. Mobile Guardian provides administrators the ability to mass enroll and supervise devices using this application.
Note: If your iOS devices are not in Apple's DEP, you would use this manual enrolment method (Apple Configurator 2) using the enrolment URL that is provided by Mobile Guardian.
With Apple configurator, the devices need to be physically connected to the Mac computer in order to be communicated with. Once the devices have been unplugged then the configurator cannot communicate with the device. This has its obvious limitations and would be time-consuming for the IT administrator.
Using Mobile Guardian application, the IT administrator is able to communicate with the device over the air and this extends to application installs, updates, device actions (such as locking the device), location-based configurations, etc. The benefits of Mobile Guardian become a lot clearer when describing the limitations of physically connecting the device whenever something needs to change, and for a school with over 1000 devices, this becomes an impossible task.
The following Step-by-Step guide will show you how to enroll your devices using Apple Configurator 2
Step 1. Retrieve the Enrolment URL from the Mobile Guardian Dashboard
i. Log in to the Mobile Guardian Dashboard and select Devices from the left-hand menu. This will display a drop-down menu.
ii. In the drop-down menu, select Add new school device and select iOS Configurator.
iii. Copy the provided URL to your clipboard or save it so that you can access it easily when you need to paste it into the correct area in the Apple Configurator 2 preparation step.
Step 2. Connecting the device to your computer and Apple Configurator 2
i. Download the AC2 application form the Mac App Store. If you have not done this already then you can do this here. Once you have downloaded the app you can open and run it.
ii. Plugin your device(s) via USB cable and see them appear on the All Devices screen within Apple Configurator.
Step 3. Settings for preparing your device
i. You would then need to prepare the Apple Configurator for your devices by clicking on Prepare in the top bar.
The manual process is being shown in this article therefore we recommend selecting the Manual configuration option.
ii. Tick Supervise Devices (Important to setup devices as supervised iOS devices )
iii. Tick Allow device to pair with other computers (Optional but highly recommended )
iv. Click Next.
Step 4. Creating a New Server
As you are trying to enrol in an MDM you will want to select the New server... option in the dropdown. Once selected click on the Next button.
Step 5. Defining an MDM Server
To define a server
i.To define a server enter the name of your choosing (we recommend Mobile Guardian so that you know exactly what the server is referring to)
ii. Paste the URL from step 1
iii. Click Next.
iv. On the trust screen you can click Next.
Step 6. Creating/Selecting an Organization
i. Choose a New Organisation or select a pre-existing organization
ii. Click Next.
iii. (Optional- skip to next step if you have an existing organization)
If you select New Organization, you must do the following as it is required to fill in the name of your Organisation, the other fields are not required thus they can be left empty.
A. Enter the name of your organization you can proceed to the next page by clicking on Next.
B. Select Generate a new supervision identity and click next.
iv. Select Skip on the Sign-in page
Step 7. Finalizing and Preparing Device
i. Select which steps you would like the iOS initial setup assistant to present to the user.
ii. Then Click Prepare
Congratulations we have completed the steps on Apple Configurator 2, now we can move on to the device.
Once you’ve completed these steps, the Configurator will begin setting up the devices you selected initially or plugged in subsequently. As these devices are configured, they will appear in Mobile Guardian automatically.
Apple Configurator will now download the latest iOS version from Apple and install it on the connected devices. Be patient while the latest iOS version downloads and installs.
All devices will now be prepared with these settings, which requires a device factory reset. After the reset, your devices will be at their iOS initial setup assistant "Hello" screen.
i. You will need to configure each iOS device from here one by one, just so it can connect to wifi and receive the enrollment profile.
ii. Once you have gone through the setup steps on the device (this is based on your selections in Step 10) you should choose your wifi network and then see a screen asking if you want to accept the automatic configuration.
iii. Apply configuration here and you will be enrolled in Mobile Guardian.
You can see the devices enrolling in the Device List screen within Mobile Guardian.
Well Done! You have successfully enrolled and completed the enrollment using Apple Configurator 2!
